The Anatomy of a Mistake

A few thank you cards for co-workers. I'm really into colored pencils lately. The last one is the result of a smudge from my hand on the card turned into a thumb-print design. One of my favorite things in life: turning a mistake into something intentional.


Which leads me to this amazing book, Mess: The Manual of Accidents and Mistakes, by Keri Smith (who I've mentioned previously because she's super sweet). It's an amazing journal/sketchbook full of fantastic ideas to stretch your mind out of your average thoughts on the creative process. More than that, it has some great ideas for just mixing up a Saturday and enjoying life more. Some ideas in this book:

-Go on an adventure with no money. Document it here.
-Create your own recipe using only things you have in your fridge and cupboard. Attempt something you've never made before.
-Try using your hand as a writing instrument. Use whatever method possible.

The Contents of a Bag

I think it's really interesting the connection between things you might have in a bag or purse any given day: gifts for friends, gifts from friends, lunch, a new purchase, a great new hair style photo (or "hairspiration"). I love seeing the story told with the objects and how often the colors relate. Here are a couple days in the life.

TED Talk: Jamie Oliver

Awesome TED talk by chef Jamie Oliver. He talks about the urgent need for obese Americans (2/3 of the country!) to be taught simple lessons in fresh food knowledge and its preparation. Among them, teaching students 10 recipes before they leave high school and granting simple food identification knowledge to primary school students (for example, what is a beet).

It's easy for me to forget, in my New York City bubble of yoga, juice detoxes, rooftop farms, and a majority of people fitting in subway seats the width of a Teen Vogue, that obesity is a very serious issue in the majority of our country. I love Jamie Oliver's passion for this issue and his simple solutions for change.

Landscape Quilts

What a lovely idea! I love these abstract landscape quilts made my kim e-m on Etsy. She is from Kansas City, KS and teaches fiber arts at the Kansas City Art Institute. I have to say, I love all these old-timey folk arts making their way into the mainstream. It's interesting to see the modern interpretation.





PS: French label A.P.C. is doing a line of quilts as well, made from their vintage recycled fabrics. Though pricey, they're, ummm, pretty awesome. (Under 'Objects' go to 'Quilts' to see all)

A Tilt-Shift Lens Makes The World A More Beautiful Place

I got a new camera for Christmas and one of its awesome features is a "miniature" program setting which simulates a tilt-shift lens. The effect explained by Wiki:

"Blurring parts of the photo simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered in making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is; the blurring can be done either optically when the photograph is taken, or by digital post-processing. Many faked-miniature photographs are taken from a high angle to simulate the effect of looking down on a miniature."

So, the most successful shots were vast landscapes or taken from some height, but really everything turned out adorable.

The Exquisite Moss Tour: Not just a terrible band name waiting to happen

Some classics from my holiday in Portland, Oregon, home to what I have found to be the most fantastic mosses I have ever seen. They grow under post office boxes, park benches, unused steps, and basically everywhere that feet don't go. In this way they literally create their own world and every time I come here I leave with a camera full of moss memories.
